The vintage The North Face Nuptse is one of the most sought-after puffer jackets on the planet. Iconic silhouette, 700-fill down, boxy cropped fit. It ticks every box. But with demand this high, fakes and misrepresented pieces are everywhere. Here's what to look for before you buy.
1. Check the Logo
The embroidered chest logo is your first tell. On an authentic Nuptse, the stitching is tight, clean and consistent. The half-dome mountain logo sits neatly within the circle, no gaps, no bleed, no loose threads. If it looks flat, printed, or slightly off-centre, walk away.
2. Inspect the Baffling
Genuine Nuptse jackets have clearly defined quilted baffles; the horizontal panels that hold the down fill. Each baffle should be uniform in size and firmly stuffed. A fake will often have uneven panels, thin fill, or baffles that collapse easily when compressed.
3. Look at the Label
Vintage TNF labels vary by era, which is actually a useful authentication tool. 90s and early 2000s pieces typically feature a woven label with the full "The North Face" name and a "Made in" country of origin. Cross-reference the label style with the era you're buying, inconsistencies are a red flag.
4. Feel the Fill
A genuine 700-fill Nuptse has serious loft, it bounces back immediately when you compress it. Thin, flat, or slow-recovering fill is a sign of either a fake or a heavily worn piece being misrepresented as Grade A. Always ask the seller about fill condition.
5. Check the Zip
Authentic vintage Nuptse jackets use YKK zippers. Look for the YKK stamp on the zip pull. Off-brand or unbranded zippers are a common shortcut on fakes.
6. Buy From a Trusted Source
The safest way to buy authentic vintage TNF is through a seller who grades and verifies their stock. At Revived Vintage every piece is authenticated and condition-graded before it goes live. No guesswork.
